Sub-Saharan Africa is rich in energy resources, but poor in energy supply. Only 290 million out of 915 million Africans have access to electricity, and the current energy deficit has a detrimental impact on economic and social development.Those that have a grid connection are often faced with unreliable supply, necessitating widespread use of costly back-up solutions. The combined power investment plans of the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the Chinese Development Bank and the United States Power Africa programme barely meet a quarter of current demand.
