Why Africa’s COP matters

Event contact: Mathilde Thue

The eyes of the world will be on Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, as global leaders convene for the COP27 round of climate negotiations from November 6 - 18.

The gathering, often referred to as ‘Africa’s COP’ is widely seen as an opportunity for the continent to shape the global debate on climate change and action, and advance sustainable development.

With many African economies already being heavily impacted by climate change, which is fuelling everything from extreme weather and food insecurity, to migration and conflict, the stakes are high to deliver meaningful impact. It has been estimated that sub-Saharan Africa could lose up to 3% of its GDP annually by 2050 due to climate change, with the region needing an estimated $30bn - $50bn each year for adaptation alone.

Ahead of the COP27 meeting the Norwegian-African Business Association (NABA) is hosting a webinar to discuss why ‘Africa’s COP’ matters, and the key issues that will determine the continent’s ability to use the occasion as a catalyst for action.

Main topics and themes:

  • Why Africa’s COP matters: To what extent does the gathering in Egypt represent an opportunity for Africa to shape the global climate agenda?

  • The energy transition: With the drive to divest from fossil fuels gathering pace globally, how can Africa tackle its transition challenge?

  • Bridging the financing gap: Where will the money for adaptation and mitigation come from?
