A memorable and inspiring business mission to Tanzania

From May 3-6, The Norwegian-African Business Association and the United Kingdom's Invest Africa led a joint business delegation to Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together a diverse group of international investors keen to explore the country’s investment potential.

This was our first country mission of 2022, and the first collaboration of its kind between Norway and the United Kingdom, bringing together almost 40 delegates from more than a dozen countries.

Our focus was on the energy sector, with Tanzania closing in on an LNG project investment that could reach $40bn, and transform the East African country’s economy. But the broad delegation also saw representation from the finance, technology, tourism, infrastructure and logistics sectors.

Here are some highlights from what was an insightful, exciting, and productive trip, coming in the midst of impressive reforms under president Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has made engagement with the private sector one of her government’s key priorities.

A number of meetings with senior policymakers was kicked off by a discussion with Finance Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, who outlined Tanzania’s fiscal priorities and investment opportunities. The meeting even made the local news!

We also met with Minister of Works, Transport & Communication Prof. Makame Mbarawa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Liberata Mulamula, Energy Permanent Secretary Eng. Felchesmi J. Mramba, Zanzibar Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Dr. Mngereza Miraji as well as Ministry of Investment Deputy Permanent Secretary Ally S. Gugu, and Central Bank Deputy Governor Yamungu M. Kayandabila.

A site visit to the Port of Dar Es Salaam gave us a first hand view of some of the infrastructure development taking place in Tanzania, where major projects including a Standard Gauge Railways are underway.

On the private sector side we were warmly welcomed by Mohammed Dewji, president of MeTL Group - one of Tanzania’s and Africa’s leading entrepreneurs - who connected us with some of the country’s captains of industry.

The week was topped off by an energy seminar hosted by Norway’s embassy in Tanzania, outlining plans for the energy transition, where NABA signed a partnership agreement with the Tanzania Renewable Energy Association (TAREA).

This was followed by a reception graciously hosted by Norway’s ambassador to Tanzania, Elisabeth Jacobsen, at her residence in Dar Es Salaam.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the delegates that participated, the representatives from government and the private sector in Tanzania, and the great team working tirelessly behind the scenes for making this successful and inspiring trip possible!
