Madagascar, the world's fifth-largest island, lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of southern Africa, with a population of around 32 million. Economic growth has averaged about 3% annually since the 2010s, reaching an estimated 4.2% in 2024 before moderating to around 3% in 2025, driven by manufacturing and services, particularly tourism, telecommunications, trade, and banking. Inflation stayed elevated near 8% through 2025 on higher food and import prices, prompting the central bank to raise its policy rate to 12% in May 2025, while exports of vanilla, cloves, nickel, garments and essential oils anchor external earnings. Growth is projected to average 4.2% over 2026–27, driven by public investment in infrastructure and private investment in mining, tourism, and telecommunication, supported by a World Bank reform programme targeting the telecommunications, energy and mining sectors.
