Malawi
Malawi remains one of the poorest countries in the world, with an economy heavily dependent on agriculture, which employs over 80% of the population, and highly vulnerable to external and climatic shocks. Real GDP grew by 1.9% in 2025, only a slight improvement from 1.7% in 2024, and still far below the 2.6% population growth rate, resulting in a continued decline in GDP per capita for the fourth consecutive year. With 270,000 young people entering the labour market each year but only around 40,000 formal jobs created, job creation is a central economic challenge.
