Botswana

Botswana's economy has been anchored for decades by diamonds, which account for over 90% of export earnings, alongside a large public sector, and this foundation supported sustained growth over a long period. The government is now prioritising economic diversification and private-sector-led growth to broaden the base beyond mining, with productivity and job creation central to its ambition of reaching high-income status. Growth was subdued in 2025 as global diamond demand recovered only gradually, with a more constructive outlook for 2026, where activity is projected to rebound to an estimated 3.1% as demand normalises. The energy sector marked a milestone in December 2025 when the 100MW Mmadinare Solar Project — Botswana's first utility-scale Independent Power Producer, built and operated by Norway's Scatec and financed in part by the IFC — came online, meeting around 7% of national electricity demand.
